#Maharashtra: Pro tem Speaker administers oath to newly elected MLAs

Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray and his wife Rashmi Thackeray met Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari in an informal meeting at the Raj Bhavan in Mumbai.

The meeting came ahead of his swearing-in as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra tomorrow evening. The Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress alliance yesterday evening elected Uddhav Thackeray as its nominee for Chief Minister’s post, following which their leaders met the Governor and staked claim to form government of the “Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi”.

The leaders submitted a letter claiming support of 166 MLAs to the governor.Earlier this morning, pro-tem Speaker Kalidas Kolambkar administered the oath to 282 MLAs out of the 288-members in the House in a special assembly session called Governor Koshyari following the Supreme Court’s order. The remaining six MLAs could not be sworn-in today as they were not present during the session.Presiding officers Babanrao Pachpute and Vijaykumar Gavit were the first to take oath followed caretaker chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. Ajit Pawar, Chhagan Bhujbal, Ashok Chavan and Prithviraj Chavan were among the members to take oath early.

Due to dramatic political developments in the state, the newly-elected members could not take oath even after a month since results of the Assembly polls were announced.

The BJP-led government, which was formed with the support of NCP leader Ajit Pawar on November 23, collapsed yesterday afternoon, after Pawar stepped down citing personal reasons as deputy chief minister following which Devendra Fadnavis, too, resigned as the chief minister.

Speaking to reporters today, NCP leader Ajit Pawar, who last week supported the BJP to form a short-lived government in Maharashtra, said that he continues to be in his party and that there is no reason to create confusion about it.

He also said that he will speak at the time. Ajit Pawar visited his uncle and NCP president Sharad Pawar’s residence late last night.

Meanwhile, a meeting of NCP leaders has been convened today. Ajit Pawar is expected to attend the meeting. DD News.
