My Times Today.Located near the Hospet town in the state of Karnataka, is the ancient village of Hampi. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this village has recently been placed second on The New York Times ‘52 Places To Go In 2019’. In fact, it is the only place in India to have earned a spot on the list. The quaint land of Hampi has a legacy so rich, people from all over the world travel to experience it. It became the centre of Hindu Vijayanagara Empire capital in the 14th century. When on the peak of its glory, it was a vast, wealthy and grand city near the Tungabhadra river. It was probably India’s richest city that attracted traders from Persia and Portugal.
